AOC: White House needs to "Get Out of Our Way": More than 60,000 migrants have arrived in New York City since last spring, with 4,200 arriving last week. Now the City's representatives and senators, led by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are urging the White House to expedite work authorization for asylum seekers, reports Documented. In an interview with the Congresswoman last Friday, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the need for migrants to support the economy and the City’s responsibility to integrate new Americans. “New Yorkers want to welcome, and they are ready to gainfully employ many of the new folks that are arriving here,” she told them.
The lawmakers sent a letter to President Biden requesting that the White House expand the discretionary measure of parole to include asylum seekers, in order to eliminate the 150-day waiting period for employment authorization. The group also argues that expediting work permits would decrease pressure on nonprofits, enable financial independence and stability for asylum seekers, and address labor exploitation.
