Recap: The What's Next Workshop
|

Hello, this week from URL Senior Recruiter Sonali Kohli. On Friday, we hosted a workshop for folks who have been laid off or are at a career crossroads to help create community, strengthen networks, and uplift our community by providing actionable advice. In small breakout rooms, we talked about balancing practical needs with a desire to do purpose-driven work; building a wealth cushion and a portfolio career; how to think about your resume; and we zeroed in on what employers are looking for.

In the meantime, here are some key takeaways from our speakers/facilitators:
You don't have to find benefits alone: Navigating the post-layoff healthcare maze can be incredibly difficult, but there are resources and actual people, like Freelancers Union's insurance broker, who can help find options that meet your needs.
Figure out your core values: URL Media CEO Mitra Kalita led a session on building a wealth cushion and a portfolio career. She recommends an exercise like this one to identify your core values. With those in mind, you can pursue multiple income streams that ensure you feel financially secure and can choose work that aligns with your purpose.
When considering what employers are looking for, it is not a one-size fits all approach, says Leonor Ayala Polley, URL's Chief of Business Development and Partnerships. A well-written and memorable cover letter still goes a long way in helping you stand out from the crowd. Write a sharp and concise cover letter that demonstrates you understand the role you are applying for and why you want to work for the organization. And don't forget about impact — highlighting your impact in previous roles demonstrates that you are a big-picture thinker who goes beyond the day-to-day tasks of a role.
Make your resume easy to read, advises career and leadership coach Phoebe Gavin. "Recruiters and hiring managers are moving quickly through lots of applications, so pay attention to your layout. Easy-to-read resumes get read. Hard-to-read resumes get procrastinated on," she said. You can find great templates on Etsy, but try not to pick one with a lot of icons, columns or pictures as the AI recruiting tools have a hard time with those.
