Without hope, we are defeated. When Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem and started leading the efforts to rebuild the walls, the neighbors were quick to notice. Nehemiah faced fierce opposition, distractions and accusations as he sought to restore the city. For years they had enjoyed the opportunity to come and go as they pleased while Jerusalem remained vulnerable without its walls. But Nehemiah didn’t just restore the walls, he was restoring hope. Hope is the fuel we need to forge ahead.
Jerusalem’s neighbors did all they could to discourage the people and distract them from their mission. But Nehemiah understood the great work he was called to. I love his response:
I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it to come down to you? - Nehemiah 6:3
When the enemy comes to discourage and distract you, don’t lose hope. Remember the work God has called you to do, for God is not praised when we give up. God is not praised when we give in. God is not praised when we abandon our call. God is praised when we see his work through to completion.
God has called you to be a part of a great work. Don’t give up. Don’t be discouraged. Hang onto and share the hope you have in Christ. For hope is the fuel we need to forge ahead and to see God’s work through to completion. Join us this Sunday as we continue our series, At the Crossroads.
In Christ’s Service,
