EJG 2014, Issue 3  

Issue 3 of the European Journal of Geography is just published and free to download. The Journal now on Scopus, s based on the European Association of Geographers’ goal to make European Geography a worldwide reference and standard. The latest issue contains seven articles on historical analysis, wildfire risk assessment, location analysis, social perception, communicating climate change, catchment approaches and Belgrade tourism. EUROGEO Conference 2015 

"Communicating Geography: serving our world" 21-22 May 2015

The 2015 EUROGEO Annual Meeting and Conference will be organised in conjunction with and hosted by the Turkish Association of Geographers (TAG), in Ankara on 21-22 May 2015. An optional field excursion to Cappadocia will take place all day on 23 May 2015. Call for sessions and abstracts very soon.

Geographer wins award

The 2014 winner of the Volvo Environment Prize, Professor Eric Lambin, is a remote sensing pioneer using advanced data collection and satellite images to understand land use and the influence of humans on the planet. His research has focused on trying to bridge two disparate communities – remote sensing scientists and human ecologists.  For more information about the winner and the Volvo Environment Prize:  http://www.environment-prize.com

High-Res Data Released  

The White House announced they are going to release the high-resolution images of SRTM globally. This release of 30m x 30m imagery is available globally and accessible on EarthExplorer http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov.

Climate Change, Human Rights

EUROGEO as an International NGO (INGO) with participatory status in the Council of Europe is involved with working group on Climate Change and Human Rights.  This group has prepared the INGO's position paper up to the COP15 to be held in Peru before the 2015 Paris conference as announced by UN. European cooperation for vocational training 

The GeoSkills Plus Project looks at the state of geo-employment and the labour market across Europe. Geo Skills Plus is a joint project with national surveying organisations from Belgium, Bulgaria, Lithuania and the Netherlands. The European umbrella organisations of Surveyors (CLGE) and geographers (EUROGEO) are partners in the project.. More

Learning & Teaching with geo-media

This new publication is a product of the Digital-eath.eu Project. It  provides a theoretical and practical introduction to the field. It is explicitly aimed at secondary education. introducing the dimensions of the emerging geoinformation society and dedicated to teacher trainers and teachers. More

Childrens Map Competition 

The International Cartographic Association and the Commission on Cartography and Children invite you to participate in the next Barbara Petchenik Map Competition 2015, an event created with the aim of promoting the creative representation of the world in graphic form by children. In 2015, this biannual international award has a special connotation, because it is organized on the frame of activities programmed within the International Map Year. The theme is '“My place in today’s world". Deadline May 1st 2015. More  

International Mountain Day 

In 2013 the United Nations General Assembly designated 11 December “International Mountain Day”. This aims to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world. Mountain Farming is the theme chosen for this year’s celebration. More

EUROGEO Members GeoEconomy have published "Why 'Where' Matters". This book examines why geospatial perspectives and geography matters. The tag line is "Practical Advice for Individuals, Communities, Companies and Countries.". How to get the book 

Free Geo-ed articles 

Taylor & Francis is offering for free until the end of 2014 a collection of articles highlighting some of the newest research in geography education. Articles are: Teaching Geography, Climate Change Education, The Importance of Fieldwork, Using and Teaching GIS. More

GIS Day 2014

Have you participated in a GIS Day before? If not why not get involved, or even organise an event this year? The theme for 2014 is Discovering the World Through GIS, it takes place on November 19, 2014. You can register your event at http://www.gisday.com/ or find out what is happening near you. GIS Day is part of Geography Awareness Week.

T3G Institute 

Applications for Esri's "Teachers Teaching Teachers GIS" 2015 institute are invited. T3G seeks 100 enthusiastic educators and influencers who want to help other educators grasp why and how to use GIS in instruction. The focus is on USA, with particular attention to K12 (given Esri's commitment to ConnectED, http://connected.esri.com), However, applications are also welcome from international educators.
